There are a number of records of Grey Phalarope in Australia but only five of these have been formally accepted by the Birds Australia Rarities Committee (BARC). Grey Phalaropes are only ‘grey’ in their wintering grounds. In summer, they are a bold brick red colour so they are commonly called ‘Red Phalaropes’ over much of the world. It’s perhaps fitting that they remain ‘grey’ in Australia, as it’s most likely they will turn up in this plumage.
